While we enter Pride Month with heavy hearts, we urge our community members to join NAAAP Pride in redirecting this moment of celebration and reflection towards committing to uplift and stand with the Black community.
As an API community, let us stand united for Black lives. We must check our own privileges, any internalized racism, and complacency as allies. Commit to addressing the inequities that disproportionately affect the Black community. We can do better. As protests demand to bring justice for many including Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, we must educate ourselves on how to dismantle a system that oppresses all people of color. We share the history and battle against systemic oppression and inequality. Our liberation is tied together.

As professionals, let us hold our employers and organizations accountable. Ask the hard, critical questions. How are we mobilizing our influences for good and not just for profit? What connections and platforms can we offer to uplift Black voices, everyday, not only when lives are lost? How can we donate time, money and talent to other organizations supporting those on the frontlines? An organization’s indifference and silence can never unite us against hate.
Protect and support those Black lives that support your business.
As an LGBTQ+ community, we are all too familiar with not feeling safe on our own streets. This year alone, at least 12 transgender or gender non-conforming people, most of which are people of color, were killed in the U.S. While recent names like Nina Pop, Tony McDade, and countless others were infrequently covered in mainstream news, we shall not look the other way. We would not have our rights today without the courageous activism by Black queens and kings who resisted against police brutality and violence. There is no pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.
